4. Death of Madame du Pompadour (The Girl in the Fireplace, 2006)
Proof that Steven Moffats excellent writing in The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances wasnt just a fluke. Here he returned and gave us an excellent story of love and loss, showing us a wonderful woman and the lonely Time Lord who seemed to genuinely love her. We knew that she couldnt go with him in the end, but the fact that the Doctor couldnt even be there when she died was a really heart-wrenching moment.
