10 Most Underappreciated Seasons Of Cult-Favourite TV Shows
5. Roanoke - American Horror Story
American Horror Story is a mixed bag at the best of times and fans will endlessly debate over which season is best - spoiler, it's Asylum - but more often than not, Roanoke is dubbed its worst.
Which is especially baffling when you consider that Hotel and Coven exist.
Prior to its release, the minds behind Roanoke kept their cards close to their chest. Intentionally keeping the series' theme and premise a secret right up until broadcast, keeping fans on tenterhooks for weeks on end.
What we eventually got was a huge departure for the show, one that took a meta approach to its horror and played things incredibly straight for the first time in the show's history. Events were focused around 'My Roanoke Nightmare' a fictional television series that depicted the haunting of Matt and Shelby Miller, with some of the cast playing the real Matt and Shelby, whilst others played them in the reenactments.
The campiness was dialed back, and there was a real focus on horror this time around, so much so that this is undeniably the closest the show has ever come to being truly scary.
Give this one another chance, it's definitely worth it.
