As well as her moral ambiguity, Van Houten encapsulated the general aura of mystery that surrounded the Red Woman. In almost every scene she was in her character carried an enigmatic presence that naturally drew the eye.

Melisandre was also a surprisingly layered character. Initially, she appeared to be someone with the utmost confidence and faith in her own abilities. Indeed, as well as her cold seductions of Stannis and Gendry, she also murdered Renly without an ounce of remorse.

However, her confident exterior soon shattered after Stannis’ downfall. Following this event, Van Houten demonstrated a more somber, guilt-ridden side to her character.

The Red Woman may not have been the most likeable individual in Game of Thrones, but Van Houten’s performance made this character entertaining throughout her lengthy time on the show.
