2. The Doctor's Wife

River Song and the Doctor have a, to put it mildly, polyamorous relationship. She's married to King Hydroflax, he's married to Marilyn Monroe, the list goes on. However, the Doctor was married long before even that. He is a grandfather, after all.

Lance Parkin's novels Cold Fusion and The Infinity Doctors elaborate on the story of Susan's grandmother, Patience. The ex-wife of Ancient Gallifreyan black hole architect Omega, she found love again with the man that would eventually become the Doctor. They had thirteen children together, the eldest of whom would grow up to father Susan.

Susan's birth was an affront to Time Lord society, and Patience was forced to leave Gallifrey to avoid the wrath of Rassilon. Her husband helped her escape Gallifrey, and vowed to take their granddaughter far away from the planet. The Fifth Doctor eventually discovered Patience on an ice planet, but he had hazy memories of their time together. She was killed by a militaristic leader who believed the Time Lords were an invading army. However, the Doctor was assured that this was not the first, or the last time that they would meet each other.
