Deep down, all anyone really wants is to be part of a relationship that consists of a wisecracking but devoted pilot husband and an Amazon warrior princess wife. Because that's exactly what Wash and Zoe are. Together, they're two of the most important members of Captain Mal Reynolds' crew on board the Serenity. Zoe fought with Mal during the war, and while Wash is a more recent addition, his loyalty is unquestionable. Their relationship is founded on mutual respect and a genuine appreciation for one another, and most people would give up a lot to have someone look at them the way that Wash looks at Zoe. The reason why everyone loves (and is jealous of) their marriage is because it's wish fulfilment on several different levels. Not only are they deeply in love with each other, but they get to gallivant across the universe having adventures which, barring a series of frankly astounding advancements in space travel over the course of the next 50 years or so, is something that very few of Firefly's viewers will get the opportunity to do.
