10½ Best Male Companions In Doctor Who History

5. Rory Williams - Arthur Darvill

Devoted to the point of waiting 2,000 years for his red-headed love €“ which, given the universe reboot in "The Big Bang," may not have "actually" "happened" €“ and dying/resurrecting nearly as often as Captain Jack, Rory not-so-slowly won everyone's hearts over beginning with "The Eleventh Hour." Daresay that no character so destined to become a companion took so long to get there €“ or was worth the wait.

Seemingly always befuddled and out of his depth, together with the Doctor and Amy, Rory slowly became as fearless as his wife. The ultimate culmination came in about 15 seconds' worth of utter badassery in "A Good Man Goes To War" as the armored guy orders destruction of a wide swathe of Cyberfleet.

While Rory's fate is usually interpreted with feelings of sad nostalgia for this lovable chap, one must admit that approaching the end alongside Amy is 100% correct and just. While the conditions of Amy and Rory's encounter with the Weeping Angels disallows further meetings with the Doctor, we can certainly appreciate that the interplay between Rory, his wife and that madman with a box made for the most fun TARDIS trio since the days of Patrick Troughton.
