15 British Sitcoms That Americans Loved the Most

6. Fawlty Towers (1975)

In total, there were barely a dozen episodes ever shot of this series, but it remains forever one of the true classics of British television programming. Written by and starring John Cleese as hotelier Basil Fawlty, the show has retained a massive cult following ever since its premiere, aided by Prunella Scales as his ever-patient wife Sybil, Connie Booth as maid Polly, and Andrew Sachs as the dimwitted Manuel. Indeed, entire phrases of dialogue have been cited for decades (among them, "I want salad cream!", "I want a Waldorf salad!" and "He put Basil in Ratatouille???") besides the unforgettable image of Cleese goose-stepping his way in Hitlerian fashion through the dining room before an emotional group of German guests. And who couldn't laugh at the way the hotel sign was occasionally re-arranged from week to week (citing among others the names "Flowery Twats" and "Farty Towels")?
