15 British Sitcoms That Americans Loved the Most

By Andrew Martin /

1. Monty Python's Flying Circus (1969-74)

The show that seemingly started it all. There's precious little to say; the collective genius of John Cleese, Michael Palin, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, Graham Chapman and the animations of Terry Gilliam was home before they began. Not to mention Carol Cleveland as the resident female and the occasional input of Neil Innes. It's no secret why even Queen Elizabeth II has always counted it among her favorite shows, not to mention legions of Americans. Python has become iconic and with good reason; sketches and songs like "Dead Parrot," "Silly Walks," "Dirty Vicar," "The Lumberjack Song," "The Larch" and "Penguin on the Television" are nuggets of gold. And though the franchise has expanded to film for nearly forty years (Holy Grail, Life of Brian, The Meaning of Life, And Now for Something Completely Different and even the largely-forgotten Jabberwocky), the show will always be where it all began.
