It's a bit puzzling why Lenny Henry has maintained status as a superstar everywhere throughout the globe except the United States. But the gentleman luckily found the chance to dazzle us Yanks as the irascible titular character Gareth Blackstock, alternately riding roughshod over his underlings in the kitchen at Le Chateau Anglais, in particular his culinary-school nemesis Everton (played brilliantly by Roger Griffiths) and sharing a home life with loving wife Janice (beautifully portrayed by Caroline Lee Johnson). And Elizabeth Bennett, in the recurring role of restaurant hostess Lola, was simply divine whenever she appeared (especially in a classic episode featuring a visit by Gareth's Caribbean father, in which Everton must come to the rescue).
