15 British Sitcoms That Americans Loved the Most

10. The Vicar of Dibley (1994-2007)

Fun-loving female pastor Geraldine Granger, transported from London seminary to the eccentrically-backwater town of Dibley, was a role some actresses would spend a lifetime trying to land, and the legendary Dawn French couldn't possibly have played the role with deeper aplomb. From the very first episode, confronted by such local characters as her inept assistant Alice Tinker (portrayed to the hilt by Emma Chambers), MP David Horton and his lovable boob of a son Hugo (played by Gary Waldhorn and James Fleet respectively) and local parishioners Owen Newitt, Jim Trott, Frank Pickle and Letitia Cropley (embodied by the brilliant Roger Lloyd-Pack, Trevor Peacock, John Bluthal and Liz Smith), the show proved once and for all that funny is just damned funny, and eliminated the British-American language barrier.
