Amok Time was the first episode to air during Star Treks second season in 1967. Finally, viewers learned more about Spocks Vulcan physiology and culture. Spocks behaviour suddenly changes in disturbing ways as he enters the Pon Farr, a time in a Vulcan males life when he must mate or die. Due to his loss of control over his emotions, Spock has an angry outburst toward Nurse Chapel, who is only acting out of concern for him. He goes so far as to throw a bowl of plomeek soup (A Vulcan dish the nurse has prepared for him) against a corridor wall. Later, in a scene that displays Leonard Nimoys fine acting skills, Spock, fighting for control, acts gently and tenderly toward Chapel, finally requesting another bowl of plomeek soup.
