1. Yaz's Sudden Character Depth
One of the biggest, most unexpected reveals this week is that of Yaz's backstory. To this point, we'd only ever seen Yaz as a positive ball of sunshine, always grinning and gawping at The Doctor. However, her dreams and a subsequent flashback reveal that she was dealing with some strong stuff three years before the events of Series 12. Yaz wanted to run away from home.
She is seen on a quiet road when a police officer shows up, summoned by her younger sister, Sonya. Though this officer's speech about mental health and talking about your feelings is very on the nose (we've discussed this already), it leads to the backstory as to how Yaz overcame her inner-doubt, and assumedly why she became a police officer in the first place. Still, this could also point to why she was so eager to run away with The Doctor too. Though she appears to have her life more on-track than she did three years prior, she would still seize the chance to simply be away from it all.
