Tom Baker's first major role after Logopolis was as Sherlock Holmes in 1982's The Hound of the Baskervilles. This worthy adaptation of the Conan Doyle classic was produced by none other than Barry Letts - a name familiar to all fans of classic Doctor Who. It seems that Holmes and Doctor Who were indelibly linked long before Steven Moffat created the current Sherlock. Tom is on record as not being entirely happy with his performance in the BBC production but he went on to play Sherlock Holmes again, this time on stage in 1985's The Mask of Moriarty. Not content with perfecting his version of the Great Detective, Tom also played Moriarty in the same production. Reactions to Tom's on screen version of Sherlock Holmes varied but the most uproariously inaccurate critique claimed that the legendarily tall and imposing Tom lacked the necessary height and presence to play Holmes. Cue derisory, mocking laughter.
