Doctor Who: 10 Things Series 8 Must Do To Be The Best Yet

6. Tone Down The Plot Complexity

Enduring narrative threads are one of the nicest changes brought about by Modern Who, but the end of the Eleventh Doctor's era became just a bit too orderly. Every element of the plot was eventually stitched together and particular events lingered for years requiring multiple run-throughs of his tenure to really get it all. Whilst it will make his era particularly impressive to watch as a whole€”when the Whovians of some still distant tomorrow are catching themselves up on the Doctor's history€”it is a problematic strategy to continue going forward. This type of plot serves to reward loyal viewers for their long-term devotion, but it comes at the risk of turning away both new and casual viewers. Doctor Who attempts to be multi-layered offering a slightly different experience for loyal and casual fans. A truly best series yet needs to avoid both new and casual viewer alienation. The best of what Doctor Who has to offer cannot be an experience for just loyal week-to-week fans. We were all new to the Whoniverse once, and the best stories will always welcome new Whovians-to-be. Also in the spirit of making Doctor Who more audience-inclusive is the next point on this list.
