These were the first episodes Steven Moffat ever wrote for Doctor Who, and they are definitely one of the high points of Season 1. Many things were introduced that became an immortal part of Who canon, including the gas mask child, Captain Jack Harkness, and the Doctor's obsession with bananas. "Are you my mummy?" is not a phrase most people would find frightening. After watching these episodes, however, just the sight of a gas mask may make anyone a bit wary. Moffat succeeds in making these the scariest episodes of the series the creepy image of the gas-mask child wandering the war-torn town, asking the question over and over, becomes the stuff of nightmares. In a way, the question "Are you my mummy?" foreshadows the conflict around another question, one that is asked over and over in Seasons 6 and 7: "Doctor Who?" Only when "Are you my mummy?" is answered can the conflict be resolved; likewise, with all the build-up to "The Name of the Doctor" with "Doctor Who? Doctor WHO?" and still no conclusive answer, perhaps we'll receive some kind of closure on his name at the Fields of Trenzalore and the inevitable Fall of the Eleventh. As far as characters go, Captain Jack Harkness is dearly beloved within the Doctor Who fanbase. And who can blame us? He's handsome, charming, hilarious, and always, always available, for anyone and anything. He sweeps Rose right off her feet, both literally and figuratively, and his funny, endearing flirtations at the Doctor make any interaction between them delightful to watch. One of the conversations between them leads to talking about bananas while Jack shows them the sonic blaster he carries, the Doctor mentions that a banana grove used to grow on the site of the weapons factory where the blaster was built. He then switches Jack's weapon with a banana and uses the blaster himself to rescue him, Rose, and Jack from the attacking gas-mask children. When asked later about it, the Doctor simply shrugs and says, "I like bananas. Bananas are good," the line which led later on to the Tenth Doctor's own preoccupation with bananas in episodes like "The Girl in the Fireplace" and "Midnight." In fact, one of the funniest moments of the episodes occurs when Jack and the Doctor are running for their lives, with Jack holding the banana: Doctor: "Don't drop the banana!" Jack: "Why not?" Doctor: "Good source of potassium!" But, bananas aside, what truly makes these episodes wonderful is their happy ending. Oh, the irony, that, in a show where there is a death is nearly every episode, Steven Moffat notorious for his penchant for killing off beloved characters ensures a truly uplifting solution where (as the Doctor says in triumph) "Everybody lives, Rose! Just this once, everybody lives!" Fantastic Quotes in "The Empty Child" from the Doctor: "I want to find a blonde in a Union Jack tee. And I mean a specific one. I didn't just wake up this morning with a craving." Fantastic Quotes in "The Doctor Dances" from the Doctor: "Go to your room! Go to your room! I mean it. I'm very, very angry with you. I'm very, very cross! Go! To! Your! Room!" "I'm really glad that worked. Those would have been terrible last words." "Well, I've got the moves, I just wouldn't want to boast." "Oh, come on. Give me a day like this. Give me this one." Rose: "Actually, Doctor, I thought Jack might like this dance." Doctor: "I'm sure he would, Rose. I'm absolutely certain. But who with?"
