Dalek: I demand orders! The Doctor: They're never gonna come. Your race is dead. You burnt. All of you. Ten million ships on fire. The entire Dalek species wiped out, in one second. Dalek: You lie! The Doctor: I watched it happen. I made it happen.
Locked inside Van Statten's vault with the mysterious creature only known as a "Metaltron", the Doctor comes face to face with his most hated enemy - a Dalek. A creature he thought he had wiped out. This is where the build-up of that intense hatred starts to hit full throttle (at least for those new to the series) and Eccleston is suitably electrifying opposite the Time Lord's iconic foe. He goes from utter fear upon realising one has survived to gloating glee when he sees it's damaged, to petulant rage and loathing to grim reflection, all in the space of a few moments. He captures the full range of the Doctor's emotions upon greeting his nemesis and in the course of doing so shows us one heck of a complex character. It's not just Eccleston that makes this such a good moment, however. The Daleks have had some great reveals in their time and this manages to be right up there. The iconic flashing lights and the grating voice hint at what is yet to come, before the lights snap on and reveal the iconic shape. It's simple, but devastatingly effective.
