The opening moments of the returned show were always going to be important and none more so than the introduction of the new Doctor himself. How was the whimsical alien last seen in a failed TV movie from the 90s going to come across in a television landscape used to grit and angst? Fantastically, as it turns out. The viewers were very much in Rose's position here as the Doctor grabs her hand, whispers 'run' and whisks her away from the Autons. They too are being whisked away and into a brave new world of aliens, monsters and time travel by a mysterious man in a leather jacket. It's the whole sequence that stands out though, really, making it a rather long 'moment' in comparison to some of the others on this list. It's a high octane opening to the show, carried on by a charismatic performance from Eccleston as he delivers some crackling dialogue that makes the Doctor stand out as an interesting and rather different sort of protagonist. Then it all ends with a literal explosion and a new generation is hooked. Not bad when the pressure on this introduction to be amazing was so high.
