Doctor Who: 10 Reasons Tom Baker Was The Greatest Doctor

By Baz Greenland /

1. The Tom Baker Factor

It€™s the man himself who makes the Fourth Doctor so great. Tom Baker is a lot like Matt Smith in many ways (which is probably why I view them as my two favourite Doctors). Tom Baker brought everything to the role, and was always immensely enjoyable on screen, having that fantastic ability to flit between the light and dark, cold and crazy, menacing and fun. He brings immense warmth to his relationship with his companions, particular the aforementioned scene with Sarah Jane in The Seeds Of Doom and his jovial banter with Romana II as they €˜holiday€™ in Paris (The City Of Death) He€™s brilliant when he takes alight-hearted approach to the situation (Jelly babies pop on a number of occasions) and when he€™s cold, such as his disregard for the dead Laurence in Pyramids of Mars, prompting a furious outburst from Sarah Jane and showing just how alien the Doctor is. And he also brings great wisdom to his role, none more so than his final scene. Surrounding by his new €˜children€™ (Adric, Tegan and Nyssa), the Doctor is accepting of his death and the arrival of the Watcher (It€™s the end€but the moment has been prepared for€) Even at the end of an era, the Doctor had one great moment still to share. Other Doctors might be your favourite (chances are it€™s your first Doctor) but there€™s no denying the impact Tom Baker brought to his role as the legendary Fourth Doctor.
