Doctor Who: 10 Reasons Why 3D Is The Wrong Idea

By Joe Martone /

Whovians rejoice! The long awaited 50th anniversary is nigh. Yes, this year our ridiculous and wonderful Timelord obsession is being put front and center in a show for the ages. Broadcast on the small screen€and the big screen? In 3D? Yes, someone thought that the cinematic equivalent of polishing a turd was a good idea. We€™re not saying that this is the worst idea Doctor Who has ever had, just ask the fans who had to sit through the Colin Baker years. However, there are a lot of things to take issue with this small decision, and the internet is the perfect place to complain about small decisions. Let€™s talk about why we should be more than a little concerned that the TARDIS is going to be flying straight into our faces, and not in a good way. But first, a warning: if you don't want to know anything about recent events in the show's history or released plot tips for the special show, turn back now. This article is for fans of New Who and Classic Who who have kept up with the series or don't care about spoilers. That being said...allons-y.

10. It€™s A Really Cheap Gimmick

Let€™s get the obvious out the way: this is an obvious ploy for publicity and money. 3D owes its origins to 50s era B-movies, which ended inspiring several Classic Who episodes. However, the effect was notoriously hokey. We may be past red and blue lenses at this point but 3D still has yet to be used masterfully in any medium. For every Avatar or Toy Story 3 that uses the effect properly, there are at least ten more Clash of the Titans or The Last Airbender type films that traded any sense of quality for a couple thousand at the box office and those had incredible budgets on their hands. How the heck is Doctor Who going to compare?
