Doctor Who: 10 Stories You Must Rewatch After The Power Of The Doctor

3. The TV Movie

After Paul McGann's return in The Power of the Doctor for an all-too brief scene and a few lines of dialogue, the Doctor Who TV Movie is definitely worth revisiting.

Apart from being McGann's only proper onscreen outing in the TARDIS, the movie is also hugely underrated, despite its flaws. The film sees Sylvester McCoy's Doctor shot dead, before regenerating into Paul McGann in a mortuary. The Eighth Doctor must then find out who he is, and regain his memory before stopping the Master from destroying the Earth.

In one of the most, um, different portrayals of the Master, Eric Roberts gives a great, albeit totally odd performance in the role, and has several great scenes alongside McGann. The feature was set to be a pilot for a new co-production of Doctor Who between the BBC and Universal Studios, with the plan involving a future high-budget series expanding on the flick.

These plans unfortunately never came to fruition, as ratings for the TV Movie were extremely low, and plans for the sequel (and any future outings of McGann's Doctor) were subsequently scrapped. This made his return in The Power of the Doctor even more exciting, as it gave us all another much-needed moment of McGann brilliance.
