Doctor Who: 10 Things To Expect From Chibnall's First Series

7. Plenty Of Heartbreak

And no, I'm not talking about the travesty that was Cyberwoman. I'm talking about Chibnall's ability to write heart-breaking drama that can put a lump in your throat. One of the key successes of the Chibnall's first series of Broadchurch was his ability to convey the trauma the death of the child had on his family and the entire community, and while uncomfortable to watch at times, there was no denying the impact it had on the viewer. And he brought that through to his sci-fi work too; from the consequences of Ambrose murdering the Silurian to save her son and husband in the Doctor Who series 5 two-parter The Hungry Earth / Cold Blood, to the tragic deaths of Tosh and Owen in Torchwood season 2 finale Exit Wounds. Tosh's final video message telling her friends to move on is heartbreaking and a powerful, emotive way to end his time on that show. While he will certainly bring the fun, expect at least one lump in your throat moment in his first series as showrunner.
