Doctor Who: 10 Worst Episodes Of NuWho

By Dan Butler /

5. Nightmare In Silver

Doctor Who fans had high hopes for Neil Gaiman's second Doctor Who episode after his first, The Doctor's Wife, went down as one of the most popular in the show's history. Let's face it, though, an episode which sees the Cybermen suddenly adopting super speed abilities was always going to struggle and, seeing as they've now lost it again (as of the Series 8 finale), it looks like the events of Nightmare in Silver has been wiped from existence by the writers, too. It's such a shame, too, because this episode had Warwick Davis as an emperor called Porridge and, instead of making the most of a brilliant guest star, Warwick and the rest of its ensemble of supporting cast might as well have stayed at home (especially the kids - sorry, but it's true!) because the episode ultimately culminated in Matt Smith partaking in a nonsensical showdown... with himself. It's just so frustrating because once again it's an episode that had so much potential. Neil Gaiman has also admitted that he wishes he'd had more time to fine tune it, so at least he's in the same boat as us. An adventure set in Hedgewick's World of Wonders was always going to be a rollercoaster, but unfortunately it wasn't the sort of rollercoaster that the viewers had in mind. Actually, these new hybrid of Cybermen should take a leaf out of their own book and delete themselves, immediately. As it turns out, they already have.
