Doctor Who fans were left disheartened when it was revealed that their favourite show would be taking a break in 2009 but their dwindling spirits were salvaged with the accompanying announcement that they'd still be getting a handful of 'specials' to make the temporary hiatus a bit more bearable. Luckily for them, stage and screen veteran Lindsay Duncan was on hand to add a much needed sense of prestige to the occasion (and one that had arguably been lacking from the gap year's first offering, Planet of the Dead) as she was introduced into the show's mythology as Captain Adelaide Brooke in The Waters of Mars. And she was certainly an almighty force to be reckoned with! Joining forces with the Tenth Doctor to save Bowie Base One - and subsequently planet Earth - from the ensuing threat of the formidable Flood, our hero's desperate attempts to save his new friend were ultimately in vain when it transpired that her imminent death was a fixed point in time. Even his temporary turn as the self-proclaimed 'Time Lord Victorious' (a 'senior moment' if ever there was one!) wasn't enough to save her, either, as she proceeded to kill herself in order to put history back on the right track. A hero until the bitter end, Adelaide will be remembered in her death as a pioneer of space travel for future generations to come.
