There had been snippets of references to Classic Doctor Who during the Russell T Davies era but it increased with the arrival of Steven Moffat. Series 5 eatured appearances by classic Doctors on no less that three occasions which served to tie NuWho even deeper to its roots. The first and most obvious example is the climax of The Eleventh Hour which sees the newly bow-tied Eleventh Doctor striding through a holographic projection of his past incarnations (obviously at this point the War Doctor was a memory he had long since suppressed!). William Hartnell's First Doctor, meanwhile, appeared twice more in Series 5. The Eleventh Doctor is confronted by five female vampires in The Vampires of Venice and when he holds aloft his psychic paper it shows a library card with a picture of the First Doctor on it. Finally, in Vincent and The Doctor, the Eleventh Doctor attempts to find the identity of the invisible monster by testing his portable device on himself. Two images are produced by the printer on the TARDIS, one of which is his first incarnation and one of Patrick Troughton's Second Doctor. Talk about blasts from the past!
