8. The Whispermen Kill Jenny - The Name Of The Doctor
The Whispermen might not have been as effective as Moffat's earlier creations the Weeping Angels and Silence, but they certainly provided the chill factor in their one appearance in the show. Clearly inspired by the Gentlemen from Buffy, they even have their own creepy rhyme to accompany them, making the Whispermen one of the most fairytale-like monsters Moffat has created yet,
Do you hear the Whisper Men? The Whisper Men are near. If you hear the Whisper Men, then turn away your ear. Do not hear the Whisper men, whatever else you do. For once youve heard the Whisper Men, theyll stop and look at you.
With their eyeless white faces, monstrous black mouths and Victorian attire making them reminiscent of a host of monstrous Jack The Ripper's, the Whispermen are a terrifying presence indeed. Add to the fact that they can reach into your chest, crush your heart and you can't harm them back and they're virtually unstoppable. The moment they appear to interrupt Madam Vastra's conference call and Jenny eerily mutters "So sorry... so sorry... I think I've been murdered" is a chilling moment that sets the scene for all the darkness to come. A creature that catch you unawares and stop your heart; the Whispermen certainly made a thrilling impact as henchmen of the deadly Great Intelligence.
