Doctor Who: 13 Actors To Play The Next Master

By Oscar Harding /

12. Mark Rylance

Master-Making Role: €˜Rooster€™ Byron in Jerusalem Many of you won€™t know Mark Rylance, because he focuses almost entirely on theatre, but the man is disgustingly talented. Chameleonic and skilled at giving a likable and relatable edge to even the most despicable villain, I€™d love to see him bring something special to an iconic role in a medium he rarely graces. No doubt about it, he€™d give us a Master unlike any we€™d seen before. Rylance is just that type of actor. In fact, it terrifies me that I don€™t know what he€™d come out with if put up against Smith€™s Doctor.

11. Michael Sheen

Master-Making Role: Teacher in The Passion Michael Sheen is one of Britain€™s greatest actors, and what€™s exciting is how he€™s still got so much further to go, so much higher to rise. He may be a little less realistic than some of the other choices here because of his star-status, but he€™s not quite above doing Indie fare and work in Britain, so it€™s not entirely implausible. I imagine Sheen to perfectly capture The Master€™s murderous glee and deep-rooted insanity. Again, you wouldn€™t just boo and hiss Sheen- even worse, you€™d see his side of things. He€™d give The Master more emotional depth than we€™ve seen before, which is perhaps more terrifying.
