Doctor Who: 5 Great Seventh Doctor Stories!

By Chris Swanson /

3. Survival (Story 155, 1989)

In this case, the last is not first. Yes, this is the final story for the Seventh Doctor (excluding the audios and the wretched TV movie). The show was canceled after this one, leaving us with 26 years of stories to look back upon, and when it went off the air, we were left with only Red Dwarf and Star Trek: The Next Generation, for sci-fi. Thankfully, this is a good story. It delves into Ace€™s past, brings Lisa Bowerman (later to voice Bernice Summerfield), into Doctor Who, and sees the final appearance of the Anthony Ainley Master who, while not always perfect as the Master, was at least always memorable, and remains the second best Master the series has ever produced. It also shows the Doctor facing some interesting ethical issues as he tries hard to fight down his darker tendencies, something that the later audio stories and €œNew Adventures€ novels would explore in great depth.
