Doctor Who: 6 Biggest Dalek Triumphs Of The New Series

6. Oswin Is A Dalek (Asylum Of The Daleks)

Jenna Coleman’s appearance in the Series 7 opener Asylum of the Daleks was one of the most surprising moments since Steven Moffat took over as showrunner, and caught many fans unawares. However, her character Oswin quickly charmed her way into Whovian affections as Coleman gave one of her best performances to date.

This immediate connection with the fans helped to create the impact of the reveal that came next. As it turned out, Oswin was a Dalek. Or at least, she had been a human who was turned into a Dalek when the intergalactic cruise liner she was on crashed into the Dalek Asylum. This showed just how cruel and twisted the Daleks are, reinforcing their villainy in cold new ways.

It also allowed for a fantastic character moment. Oswin reinforced her humanity by wiping the Daleks' memory of their archenemy, ensuring that they would never aim to better themselves to defeat the Doctor. This creates an opposition between humanity and the Daleks - their definition is the opposite of each other.

It’s a strong moment, and a good treatment of the villains from Skaro. One of the best of the Moffat era.
