Martha Jones is probably one of the most despised companions in Doctor Who history. As she herself so blatantly phrased it, Martha was a rebound, simply the Doctors attempt at distracting himself after the loss of his cherished Rose. The Tenth Doctor and Martha's one-sided romance did nothing to enhance their characters - it simply established Martha as uninteresting, annoying and piteous, and the Doctor as an aloof, insensitive jerk. Whenever Martha attempted to catch his eye, the Doctor would studiously avoid her and wasnt even aware of the so very obvious advances she made. Sometimes you just wanted to grab the Doctors shoulders and lurch him awake from his mournful reverie, or utilize a substantial amount of duct tape to shut Martha the hell up and hide her ridiculous puppy face, whose mouth was permanently turned down at the corners. Its a wonder Martha wasnt tragically killed off by doing some deadly stunt just to win the Doctors attention for once and mend her extensively damaged self-esteem. Too bad Martha wasn't around in Series 8, seeing as the Doctor is now your average Scottishly contentious, over-protective space-dad rather than your handsome erm... space-boyfriend? Nonetheless, Martha decided to become our immoderately tough, revered (for doing what, exactly?), leather-clad heroine. So theres her story for you - transitioning from the weak-willed, lovesick archetype to the overly-assertive and resilient soldier archetype. A brilliant, inspiring tale. Next?
