If ever the Doctor as god metaphor became really transparent, it was in this episode, when everyone in the world prayed together in order to give the Doctor a floating crucifixion pose. Christian symbolism aside, the responsibility for this miracle is placed squarely on humanity. Led by Martha Jones, the entire human race told itself a story, and said a prayer. The result was the defeat of the Master, and the restoration of the Doctor. It was an episode about the power of thought, the power of belief. It was about the wonders humanity can do, when it unites and hopes. After being treated like dirt for a year, after the Master tried desperately to break their spirits, humanity kept thinking, kept being human. And they emerged victorious. Thats where brute force and cynicism get you: a lonely pyre.
