Doctor Who: 9 Great Third Doctor Stories

By Chris Swanson /

8. Terror of the Autons (Story 055, 1971)

Ok, I€™ve never been that into the Autons as villains. They€™re ok and all, but there€™s nothing all that impressive about them. But this episode makes this list for two reasons. First, it introduces the Doctor€™s new companion, Jo Grant (Katy Manning), and second, and perhaps most importantly, it introduces the Doctor€™s €œbest enemy€, the Master (Roger Delgado). Now this story does have a lot of weirdness to it. Seeing people killed by poison daffodils and watching a man being smothered by a living plastic chair is only slightly less stupidly hilarious than seeing Mickey getting swallowed by a garbage bin in €œRose€. Despite that weirdness, this remains a great episode because of the Master and Jo and all that they mean to the series as a whole.
