Why it's beloved? It's a complex time travelling episode spanning Danny's childhood to a glimpse to his and Clara's future. Not only that, but fans also get to see the Doctor as a child, something that has never been shown before in the show's 50 years of history. We also get an insight into why the Doctor doesn't use guns and now know that the abandoned barn the War Doctor visited in the Time War is actually were the Doctor went whenever he was scared as a child. Additionally, the prospect that there is always someone in the room when a person is alone is scary concept indeed, one that's encapsulated by the much beloved scene in Danny's bedroom. In the end, the message is that fear can be used to a person's advantage in difficult situations. Why it's overrated? It is considered as one of the best episodes of the revived series. A shinning gem of Series 8 that received universal acclaim upon the episode's release. Really? The message that fear can be used in the most dire situation is a good message but it didn't have to use all these timey-wimey events spanning the past to the future just to get there. It's just Steven Moffat being self-indulgent, as per, and showing the audience how clever he thinks he is. What does showing Clara and Danny's descendant even accomplish, for example? Nothing. The first human time traveller could have been anyone and the dinner scene conversations between Danny and Clara are so forced that it makes Clara look stupid or unlikeable for casually saying stuff that she already knows are sensitive topics to Danny. Worst of all, Listen presents an unlikeable version of the Twelfth Doctor, a version who would forcefully bring someone to the dangerous mission of making contact with a monster he doesn't fully understand. According to Listen, he is someone that will do anything he wants, no matter who protests - someone that would die just to satisfy his curiosity. Come on, he tried to open a door that would suck him into outer space because he was curious that there might be a monster out there? He would've died if there had been and he would've died if there hadn't. The thin line between bravery and stupidity was a mile ago. What's more, the ending of the episode argues that there was no monster all along, that it was all in the minds of the main characters. This means that these people, who have seen real monsters countless times, do not know the difference between a real monster and a kid pranking them. Yes, the Doctor, who has fought countless gods and demons, has just been duped by a little kid. And yes, he is the smartest guy in the universe. So, is this one of the best episode of all time? Far from it. One of the farthest, in it. Do you agree with this list? Are there any other episodes of the revived series that you think are overrated? Let us know in the comments below.
