Doctor Who: Every Russell T Davies Episode Ranked From Worst To Best

31. The Church On Ruby Road

RTD invented the Doctor Who Christmas special, writing six in total.

The weakest of these is, weirdly, the most recent – The Church on Ruby Road – which somehow doesn’t feel as ambitious as the specials of his first era.

We do get a cool sequence of the Doctor and Ruby ascending to a flying pirate ship inhabited by Goblins.

But when they return the story grinds to a halt, with the next ten set in the Sundays’ flat. Then Ruby disappears, and everything suddenly feels very contained for no apparent reason.

There’s also The Goblin Song, which definitely isn’t the worst thing ever – but also, with lyrics like “better than beef”, isn’t quite the Disney-style classic it thinks it is.

Still, it ends on a high note, with Ruby discovering the magic of the TARDIS and Ncuti Gatwa confidently announcing that he’s the Doctor. Brilliant stuff.
