Doctor Who: Every Russell T Davies Episode Ranked From Worst To Best

21. The Well (Co-written With Sharma Angel-Walfall)

The Well has that sophisticated sci-fi feel that Doctor Who should absolutely be going for in this day and age, and builds tension incredibly (ahem) well.

It just didn’t need to be a Midnight sequel. Because the creature possessing Aliss behaves nothing like the Midnight Entity.

It operates in a broadly similar way, possessing a helpless individual and using them to turn people against each other. But the stealing of words and voices that made Midnight so effective is completely absent, replaced with the much more gimmicky idea of “dying at midnight”.

It’s a story that could've easily stood on its own two feet, and would've been all the better for it. Rather than a deliberate attempt to build on the lore, the Midnight connections have clearly just been tacked on.

It's still very effective and spooky however, especially in its first half, and despite a rushed ending there's enough there to make it one of the strongest Season 2 episodes.
