10 Doctor Who Questions Not Even Fans Know The Answer To

2. What Does The Doctor Do When They’re Not Saving The Universe?

It’s easy to assume the Doctor spends their whole life saving the world, because we only ever see the exciting bits.

But what do they do the rest of the time?

Where do they sleep? Do they even sleep? When Rory asks the Doctor whether he has a bedroom inside the TARDIS in The Doctor's Wife, he doesn’t answer. Bill claims to have found the Doctor's room in Knock Knock – but he says he only sleeps there "if [he] needs to".

We did see the Tenth Doctor take a nap in The Christmas Invasion, but that was part of his regeneration recovery, so it doesn't count.

Another obvious one is food. We’ve occasionally seen the Doctor eat and drink, their tastes varying from incarnation to incarnation (the Third Doctor was quite happy to down wine, the Eleventh Doctor despised it). But they don't snack, or stick to a regular meal pattern. In fact, they don't tend to eat anything unless it's actually placed in front of them. It's not like they're nipping out for a cheeky Nandos between adventures... or is it?

Likewise, we've never seen the Doctor go to the toilet. And it should probably stay that way.

Maybe Time Lords just don't need to sleep, or eat, or drink, or go to the loo as much as humans. But we saw in The Power of Three just how bored the Doctor gets when there's no aliens to give a scolding to, so they must have ways to fill their downtime, right?

Oh to be a fly on the wall in the TARDIS…
