3. All Of Time And Space

Alongside all the new monsters and new friends, we can look forward to being transported to a bunch of new worlds. Some of them will be familiar to us from the history books, but others will be rooted either in how we might imagine the future to be, or in the limitless realms of pure fantasy. Doctor Who’s sandbox has always been infinitely big - in concept if not execution. With a central character who actively resists being fixed to a certain time and place, Doctor Who is one of the most ambitious (and costly) dramas to produce.

This series has been filmed in a wide variety of locations – from Cardiff and Sheffield to Spain and South Africa. The trailer has only given a few glimpses into the settings of individual episodes, but the cinematography looks spectacular – with plenty of shots to establish just how vast those worlds will be.

Add to the location work the magic of CGI, camera filters and artificial lighting, and we could be treated to some of the most bizarre alien settings ever seen in Doctor Who. Jennifer Perrett, one of the new directors for the series, is particularly excited to see how one zany action scene will look like, since the entire world will be created with digital effects.

The visual effects for this series are being handled by a new team (with Milk VFX having retained the contract throughout the Russell T Davies and Steven Moffat years). The contract is now with London based outfit Double Negative, whose award winning list of credentials is truly impressive. With blockbuster movies Inception and Blade Runner 2049, and hit TV shows Westworld (season two) and Krypton to their name, their work could really take Doctor Who to new heights.
