Doctor Who Series 7: 10 Reasons Why You Must Watch

3. More of Matt Smith

Speaking of big shoes to fill, Matt Smith had some of the biggest in the franchise€™s history to step into when David Tennant left. Personally, I€™ve enjoyed Matt Smith€™s Doctor more than I liked Tennant€™s, but I know this feeling isn€™t universally held. I find there€™s something intoxicating about the excitement with which Smith portrays the Doctor. It€™s almost as if he€™s looking at the world through the eyes of a child, benefitted by the wisdom of an old man. Importantly though, Smith€™s Doctor has left behind some of the self-loathing of Tennant€™s character, who seemed haunted by his choices at every turn. Put those pitch folks and burning torches down. I€™m not saying Tennant€™s Doctor was terrible, in fact, along with Tom Baker and Sylvester McCoy, Tennant is one of my favourites to have picked up the sonic screwdriver. I just prefer Smith€™s take on the Doctor, which is to a large extend Steven Moffat€™s take on the character.
