Speaking of big shoes to fill, Matt Smith had some of the biggest in the franchises history to step into when David Tennant left. Personally, Ive enjoyed Matt Smiths Doctor more than I liked Tennants, but I know this feeling isnt universally held. I find theres something intoxicating about the excitement with which Smith portrays the Doctor. Its almost as if hes looking at the world through the eyes of a child, benefitted by the wisdom of an old man. Importantly though, Smiths Doctor has left behind some of the self-loathing of Tennants character, who seemed haunted by his choices at every turn. Put those pitch folks and burning torches down. Im not saying Tennants Doctor was terrible, in fact, along with Tom Baker and Sylvester McCoy, Tennant is one of my favourites to have picked up the sonic screwdriver. I just prefer Smiths take on the Doctor, which is to a large extend Steven Moffats take on the character.
