9. Why Has The Doctor Forgotten The Evacuation Call Sign?

The Lupari are evacuating the human race from Earth in order to save them from the Flux, and Karvanista turns out to be a reluctant saviour rather than a ruthless enemy. But the Doctor only finds this out when Karvanista reveals that the call sign that’s bugging her in his ship is ‘species recall’. It’s an odd thing for the Doctor to be so concerned about, and this jarring moment in the episode suggests it might hold a deeper significance.

It’s never been seen in Doctor Who before, so this may well go back to the Doctor’s forgotten memories before she was adopted on Gallifrey. Has she been involved in a similar mission, either whilst working for the Division, or as a recipient of such aid? Could it be that her entire race was evacuated from their planet of origin similar circumstances?

Karvanista, unlike Dan, is almost certainly more than he seems. Not only is he a Division operative, he has also arrived to pick up Dan before the rest of the Lupari fleet. We will certainly be meeting him again as the story unfolds and he may well be the key to unlocking the truth about who the Doctor is.

That’s if he can be trusted – there’s something about the Master’s MO with him – the hypnosis, the grand statement about his own evilness ('vanquisher of the thousand civilisations'), and the miniaturising of Dan’s house.
