Doctor Who: War Of The Sontarans Review - 7 Ups & 5 Downs
3. UP - Swarm And Azure Vs. Yaz And Vinder
And now, to the other juicy plot of the episode. Yaz pops up in an unfamiliar location and immediately takes control of the situation, following her new WWTDD mantra (we really thought for a moment they weren’t going to overexplain this and leave it as a subtle moment. So close). She soon encounters Vinder, who seems to have a disgraced past for us to explore - is it us or was there a little chemistry going on here? Potential love interest? We will see.
But let’s get to the real reason this is an up on this list: Swarm. Stealing the show every time he’s on screen, this walking crystal is genuinely creepy and feels like a threat that could rival the Doctor’s biggest foes. The character design and performance are on point as Swarm toys with Yaz and Vinder, showcasing the extent of his power and doing so in style. We are very interested to learn more about this compelling new big bad, as he’s shaping up to be the best antagonist of Chibnall’s run to date. As for his companions, Azure and the newly introduced ‘Passenger’ - we aren’t quite sure what to make of them yet.
This plot culminates in yet another strong cliffhanger, with Swarm going full Thanos mode and supposedly pulling time itself through Yaz and Vinder with a snap of his fingers - let’s hope that this time around the cliffhanger is resolved a little better.
