7. Cybermites (First Appearance: 2013)

During the Cyber-Wars, the Cybermen developed an even smaller, more advanced form of Cybermat: the Cybermite.

Resembling cybernetic silverfish, Cybermites are adapted to keep the Cybermen going at any cost.

Even more versatile than Cybermats and Cybershades, they behave like insects, constantly scuttling around and ending up in places where they’re not welcome.

Crucially, they’re capable of performing partial conversions, which enables them to rapidly expand the Cybermen’s forces.

For instance, on Hedgewick’s World a new race of Cybermen lay dormant in an underground repair facility, requiring a new Cyber-Planner to lead them.

The Cybermites were also waiting, above ground, having infiltrated Webley’s World of Wonders.

When Artie and Angie arrived with the Eleventh Doctor, they were able to determine that they were children, and therefore suitable Cyber-Planner candidates.

Additionally, the Cybermites performed a partial conversion on Webley himself, by first animating his chess-playing Cyberman.

As the Cybermen woke up the need for Cybermites diminished. But they also facilitated the Doctor’s conversion into Mr Clever.

Like insects, they’re almost impossible to eradicate completely. Which means that, more than any other type of Cyberman, they always survive.

Indeed, even after the business on Hedgewick’s World was over, a single Cybermite could be seen drifting through space…
