3. Targaryen Parallels

The show has made parallels between Jon and Daenerys plenty of times before, but doubled down on the idea this week.

For a start, they're the only two locations we get in the episode, marking the first time that their respective storylines have been the only ones focused on (we've had the purely Jon-centric Watchers on the Wall, but not one where it's Jon/the North and Dany/dragons).

There's a similarity in the way Jon and Grey Worm speak to the rivals in battle, about soldiers not fighting for men who won't fight for them, but the biggest example comes when Jon manages to make his way up through the pile of bodies. Shot from above, Jon's face is the only one you make out in the sea of black-clad fighters. It's deliberately mirroring the shot of Daenerys in the Season 3 finale, Mhysa, when she's lifted up into the crowd (although less racially problematic).
