5. The Broken Man

Even though Ian McShane effectively spoiled the Hound's return well before the season even started, the reveal that he was still alive in an unprecedented prologue was a call to whoop gleefully at the screen.

Again, the way it was presented was very much a perfect reflection of the show's awareness of what the fans wanted: giving the favourite character a special welcome was an easy, hugely effective win for them.

From there, it almost didn't matter what happened, but it just so happened it was a well balanced, interesting chapter that saw a welcome escalation for Arya's story (and her improbable survival from multiple stab wounds), a painful end for the Hound's new friends and the introduction of the immediately beloved Lady Mormont and her tiny army of hard men.

And of course we also got a big hint that Margaery wasn't as pious as she was claiming, and the start of Olenna's rise to the angel of vengeance she will no doubt be in the seventh season.

Best Moment: The prologue, obviously.
