How Every Season Of American Horror Story Is Connected

The pieces of the AHS puzzle finally come together.

American Horror Story has been terrifying the living daylights out of us for seven years now. While much of the cast has remained the same during that time, the Ryan Murphy-produced series has rebooted every year with a brand new storyline, setting, and theme - each one arguably more horrifying than its predecessor. However, in spite of the show's unique ability to start fresh each season, the storylines actually exist within the same universe.

The eighth season - subtitled Apocalypse - which is currently airing, is the long-awaited crossover between the Murder House and Coven seasons of the show, meaning that the aforementioned seasons are officially connected to one another. However, die-hard AHS fans will know that this was already alluded to in earlier seasons of the show.

There have been a few neat references over the years, as well as some re-appearing characters, all of which have aided in connecting the seasons together. In fact, you might be shocked to know that there has now been enough links established throughout American Horror Story's run to confirm that the events of every season have all take place within the same shared universe.

6. Cult Is Connected To Asylum

Whether you loved it or hated it, there's no denying that Cult's tone was incredibly unique in comparison to previous seasons of American Horror Story. As a result, it made it rather difficult for viewers to guess what other season of the show Cult was connected to.

Our confusion ended during the final episode of the series, when Ally's new girlfriend suggested that she appear on Rachael Maddow's talk show. Beverly disagreed, telling the young woman that if Ally didn't speak to Lana Winters, then she'd hardly talk to Maddow.

Of course, Lana Winters is one of American Horror Story's most recognisable characters, and initially appeared in the show's second season, Asylum. The tough reporter endured pain and torture in the Briarcliff institute for the criminally insane before becoming a hugely successful journalist. This reference in Cult confirms that the politically charged season is, in fact, linked to Asylum.
