The series that started it all, The Original Series, aired from 1966 to 1969 in the United States, before entering syndication. It premiered in the UK on the BBC in 1969. The first pilot, The Cage, failed to secure a series order, but impressed NBC executives enough to order a second pilot, Where No Man Has Gone Before.
The show was remastered in the '90s, updating the effects with new CGI enhancements. These are the versions currently available on Paramount+.
The show was groundbreaking, despite struggling with viewership at the time. Its impact was such that it was followed by an animated series in 1973 and a motion picture in 1979.
