While RTD has always been great at promoting Doctor Who, his second era was characterised by weird comments and controversies, which were only tenuously linked to the stories themselves.

There was usually some kernel of truth to what he was saying, but it was always blown out of proportion and presented in a way that was deliberately provocative.

Take the debate about Davros and the “disabled villains” trope. Pointing out the stereotype is one thing, but in the very first episode of Season 2 he went and wrote a disabled villain, so what exactly is your stance here?

There was his comment about the sonic screwdriver looking too much like a gun, hence its new TV remote design... only for the Fifteenth Doctor to go and shoot down Omega with a massive laser gun. Again, why are you saying these things in the first place? It just comes across as virtue signalling and stirring the pot for no reason, and plain confusing when you go and contradict these statements with your own writing!

The same goes for him saying that the term Sea Devil is “racist”. Just... weird. Or that David Tennant couldn’t wear Jodie Whittaker’s clothes because it was disrespectful to drag culture, despite Sacha Dhawan having worn them in literally that same episode, which nobody batted an eyelid at.

It’s hard to take someone seriously when they’re so blatantly stirring up culture war-style debates in order to make headlines. Honestly, this type of stuff does more to lower the public’s opinion of the show than raise it.
