Star Trek: 10 Captains That Totally LOST IT
8. Jonathan Archer Barks Up The Wrong Tree
It's not said often enough; T'Pol has the patience of both a Vulcan and a saint.
Jonathan Archer starts A Night In Sickbay already in a foul mood, thanks to deteriorating diplomatic efforts with the Kreetassans. Things only get worse when the returning away team are all cleared after decontamination...apart from Archer's dog, Porthos, who has picked up a pathogen.
Now, we would never suggest that Porthos is anything but a very good boy. But Archer's insistence on blaming the Kreetassans for Porthos becoming ill, rather than shouldering responsibility for taking his beloved dog onto an alien world, is just the start of his meltdown.
Archer becomes increasingly aggravated at the idea of having to engage with the Kreetassans (literally a part of the captain's job). He demands to know if T'Pol's found out why they're so upset (instead of asking himself) and whether she's apologised for it (instead of apologising himself). When she reveals it's because Porthos urinated on a sacred tree, he's only riled further, and even berates T'Pol for having apologised on his behalf.
Make your mind up, Archer.
It doesn't stop there...he outright snaps at T'Pol when she reminds him their priority is to secure a plasma injector regardless of his reluctance to perform a ritual of reconciliation. And later, things take a weird turn when it emerges some of his anger might stem from sexual tension with T'Pol.
Honestly, Archer's behaviour almost feels like one long tantrum. And while he does end up performing a rather quirky ceremony to apologise, we've seen captains have to do far worse in the name of diplomacy.
And don't worry, Porthos was fine in the end.
