7. Carol Freeman Makes Headlines

It's not unusual to see Captain Carol Freeman anxious and frazzled in Star Trek: Lower Decks, but the episode Trusted Sources takes it to a whole new level.

When the arrival of a journalist coincides with 'Project Swing By', Freeman immediately freaks out. Panicking at the prospect of making a bad impression, she starts yelling instructions at her senior staff to get the ship in order.

Freeman's stress intensifies when their entirely uneventful second contact threatens to make both her and her ship look redundant on camera. Carol clearly hasn't heard the phrase 'no news is good news'.

Several interviews later, the journalist concludes that Freeman's command of the Cerritos is chaotic and even silly, listing off adventures that show her in a less than favourable light. Freeman becomes convinced it was her own daughter, Beckett Mariner, who had bad-mouthed both her and the ship.

Absolutely fuming, Freeman refuses to listen to Mariner's denials, remorselessly lambastes her, and punishes her with a transfer to the dreaded Starbase 80...a fate worse than Chula.

Now, it can be argued that Mariner was well overdue some kind of consequence or transfer given past behaviour...but not for this. In classic 'The Boy Who Cried Wolf' fashion, Mariner's interview had actually been full of warmth and pride. But by the time Freeman realises her mistake, it's too late...Mariner is gone and has resigned from Starfleet.
