Star Trek: 10 CORE Seven Of Nine Moments
2. The Murder Of Bjayzl
One of Seven's darkest moments comes in the first season of Star Trek: Picard. The episode Stardust City Rag reveals that, after Voyager returned home, Icheb achieved a commission in Starfleet. Rather than set him on the path for a long and happy career, it puts him in the crosshairs of ex-Borg hunter Bjayzl. He was captured, his Borg implants were harvested for profit, and by the time Seven discovers him, she has no option but to mercy kill him to put him out of his misery.
This shocking revelation was a hard twist from the assumptions of many fans of the show. As Icheb's eye was pulled from its socket, there were more than a few lunches pulled from stomachs. For Seven, this was a foundational moment in the next decade of her life.
Her hunt for Bjayzl took her to Freecloud, a planet where lawlessness was standard practice, though also a planet where bounty hunters widely recognised someone like Seven (implants and all). The crew of La Sirena gave Seven a lift, and while they attempted to save Bruce Maddox from Bjayzl, she had another plan. Having successfully saved the cyberneticist, Seven beams back down to the planet, two phaser rifles in hand.
She murders Bjayzl in cold blood, vaporising the criminal before shooting her way out of the bar. It was a darker representation of the former Drone than audiences had yet seen, leaving a shocked set of viewers in its wake. In the heat of the moment, her reaction may have been understandable, even if it was still unexpected by those who were used to the calm, collected Starfleet approach.
