This was the first ever Treehouse of Horror segment aired all the way back in 1990 and is definitely the most important on this list. This is because it set the expectations for the new episode format, and if it wasn't as good as it was, we would not have had 27+ years of the special episodes to follow.

The story is based on a relatively simple haunted house concept that The Simpsons are able to elevate to much greater heights. Not only are we treated to the family trying to kill each other, we get to see the perspective of the house itself, facing eternity with The Simpsons, and the realisation that it is just as scared of the family as they are of it.
