2016 has been a relentlessly miserable year for many reasons, so when people sit down to watch something they’re probably not seeking out more of it. That’s what The Walking Dead has become though: a grinding misery machine, where the heroes lose a lot, occasionally win, and then lose some more.

The repeated message is the new world is an awful place where people suffer unimaginable loss, then die horribly. The show has been stuck on this loop for the last few seasons, with season seven being a deep dive into the misery machine, and it looks set to continue milking it until at least the end of the current run.

Fans are tired of the grind, and rather than just subject themselves to wallowing in hopelessness out of loyalty to the show, they’ve decided to make a positive change.
